Ginger Cat Appreciation Day is September 1. Give your orange kitty a hug and extra treats or adopt one. Here are some things you should know about orange cats:
- All orange cats are tabby cats with some sort of tabby marking!
- 80% of all orange tabby cats are male while more than 80% of calicos are female.
- Similar to fair skinned human redheads, ginger kitties will often develop freckles on their noses, and sometimes their mouths.
- The orange color comes from a pigment called pheomelanin, which can influence their color from cream to red. It’s the same pigment that produces red hair in humans.
- There are many famous ginger cats. Here are just a few:
- Winston Churchill was a cat lover with an orange tabby named Jock. His estate requires that an orange cat named Jock always live there.
- Garfield from the infamous comic strip.
- Puss in Boots from Shrek 2.
- Spot from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
- Hermione Granger’s cat, Crookshanks from Harry Potter.
- Orion, holder of the Arquilian Galaxy from Men in Black.
